The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has launched the 2025 phase of the ‘Kreeda Shakthi’ scholarship programme, aimed at supporting promising young athletes across Sri Lanka.

At a ceremony held yesterday (May 28), over 300 athletes aged 18 to 20 were awarded scholarships under the first phase of the initiative. The programme targets a total of 900 athletes from 21 selected sports who have demonstrated exceptional performance at national junior-level competitions.

Speaking at the event, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said Sri Lanka needs athletes with discipline and passion—not those who compete only for money. He assured that the government is committed to providing necessary support to help talented athletes reach their full potential.

Deputy Minister Sugath Thilakaratne stressed that achievements gained through banned substances are short-lived, and urged young athletes to pursue victory through proper training and commitment. He also expressed hope that the scholarship would encourage students to remain in sports while balancing their education. (Newswire)
